HIKING, TRAILS Dassieshoek Nature Reserve lies within the Langeberg West Mountain Catchment Area and extends over 865 ha on the southern slopes of the Langeberg range. Altitudes above sea level ranges from 350 to 2 070 m and the steep cliffs and deep gorges provide a magnificent backdrop. Montane fynbos (heath) is dominant and there are many rare and interesting plants. As is typical of the Western Cape, mammals are not abundant, although baboon, klipspringer, Cape grysbok and small grey mongoose are commonly spotted. Leopard and caracal also occur in the Langeberg range. The lower-lying areas receive an average annual rainfall of 600 mm, and snow falls on the higher peaks during the winter months. Summers are mild to hot. Location: West-central area of the province, north of Robertson. Access: From Robertson follow Voortrekker Rd northwards for about 8 km to the reserve. The route is clearly signposted. Permits are required and are available at the entrance gate or at the municipal officer in town. Accommodation: 35-bed house for hikers only. Robertson has hotels as well as self-catering accommodation and a camping and caravan site at Silverstrand Holiday Resort. Other facilities: Part of a 37 km hiking trail (which starts at Silverstand) passes through the reserve; shorter walks; picnic sites with fireplaces. The nearest shops and fuel suppliers are at Robertson. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 08h00 to 18h00.
